Hi everyone, Joey here!
Today, I want to talk about what it’s really like to wear contact lenses—including the dos and don'ts that every wearer should know.
Wearing contact lenses is a big responsibility. Whether you are learning how to insert them for the first time or you've been wearing them for years, maintaining good habits requires self-discipline.
When you get your first pair of lenses, your optometrist or optical assistant should always walk you through how to insert, remove, and care for them properly. Proper guidance is essential for keeping your eyes healthy! To help you along the way, I’ve put together a master list of essential contact lens rules every wearer needs to know.
🧼 Hygiene & Handling Basics
Wash hands with soap and water: Always wash your hands thoroughly with plain soap and running water before touching your lenses.
Never use hand sanitizer before handling lenses: Hand sanitizer leaves residue on your skin that will cause severe burning and irritation if it gets on your lens.
Keep right and left lenses separate: Always put the right lens in your right eye and the left in your left eye. If one eye happens to develop a minor irritation, keeping the lenses separate stops it from spreading to the other eye.
Avoid rubbing your eyes: Rubbing your eyes while wearing lenses can scratch your cornea or dislodge the lens behind your eyelid.
Put lenses in BEFORE applying makeup: Always insert your contacts before applying makeup, and take them out before removing your makeup at night.
🚫 Critical "Don'ts" (Water & Sleeping Safety)
Never sleep or nap in your lenses: Sleeping in contact lenses deprives your eyes of oxygen and dramatically increases the risk of serious corneal infections that can lead to permanent vision loss.
No showering or swimming with lenses: Tap water, pool water, and lakes contain microscopic organisms (like Acanthamoeba) and chemicals like chlorine that trap bacteria against your eye.
Never wear damaged or chipped lenses: If a lens has even a tiny tear or chip, discard it immediately. Wearing a damaged lens can easily scratch your cornea.
Remove lenses if your eyes are red or irritated: Never wear lenses if you have pink eye or any redness. Wearing contacts while your eye is fighting off a virus or infection will severely delay your recovery.
🧴 Care, Solutions & Accessories
Replace solution and cases every 3 months: Multi-purpose contact lens solution expires 3 months after opening—throw away any remaining solution once that mark hits. You should also replace your contact lens storage case every 3 months.
Use fresh solution every time: Never "top off" or reuse old solution in your lens case.
Use contact-lens-compatible eye drops only: Regular rewetting drops aren't always safe for contacts. Check with a pharmacist or your optical team to ensure your drops are safe for lens wearers.
Teens need guidance: Young teenagers learning to wear lenses should always be supervised by a parent or guardian to ensure they build safe daily habits.
💡 Quick Tips for Choosing the Right Lens
Indoor vs. Outdoor environments: As a general rule, lenses with lower water content often perform better in dry, air-conditioned indoor spaces (because they draw less moisture from your eye), while lenses with higher water content can feel more breathable outdoors.
Stick to the 8 to 10-hour rule: To keep your eyes healthy and hydrated, aim to wear your contact lenses for a maximum of 8 to 10 hours a day.
Buy registered, certified lenses: Always purchase your lenses from trusted sources. At N&D Gallery, all of our contact lenses are medical-device registered and approved for safety by the Ministry of Health.
